Anyways, let me at least attempt it, knowing my poor knowledge of geography. :)

1) No idea but not in Africa. Probably China
2) Alps in France ?
3) Nepal. I have been there so know it.
4) Tibet plateau
5) No idea
6) One of Burma, Thailand and Indonesia? I couldn't measure. Ha ha
7) St Petersburg
8) Japan !! We have been told, Suraj wahi niklta hai

My blog ain't so popular - so you're the first one!

I've updated Q9 to include the definition of a "free-standing mountain". Imagine a large plain surface and 1 mountain in the middle of it - that would be a free-standing mountain (i.e. not part of a range or connected to other peaks).

Answers:

1) Gobi desert covers parts of northern and northwestern China, and of southern Mongolia.

2) Argentina has the highest peak that is not part of the Himalayan range or sub-range. It is Mt. Aconcagua, in the Andes, at 6,962m.

3) Nepal

4) Tibetan plateau is the highest plateau in the world. Tibet is to the west of China.

5) Tanzania. It is most famous for its annual migration of over one million and a half white bearded wildebeest and 200,000 zebra.

6) Myanmar (Burma)

7) St. Petersburg

8) Japan

9) Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania is the highest peak in Africa at 5,895m.

10) Somalia. Watch "The Last King of Scotland" - it is an excellent movie on Idi Amin.
